The goal: eliminate thermal bridging for a more comfortable home

 

Thermal bridges are junctions where a break in the continuous insulation of a building envelope allows heat loss.  Another way to look at thermal bridging is when one material is more conductive that another, allowing heat to flow.

  • Thermal bridges can also be extensive at doors or windows. 

Penetrations in the building for roof vents, bath vents, plumbing vents, electrical penetrations.

CELLULOSE

 

Why cellulose is great

 

Significant R value per inch...3.7 R/in

As cheap as fiberglass

Great for sound control

Great at preventing air movement in cavities

High vapor permeability

Treated with borate for fire and pest resistance

Borate is non-toxic to humans

Low global warming potential

Up to 85% recycled content

 

Cellulose limitations

 

Cannot get wet

Installation consistency is key

POLYISO

Why polyiso is great

 

It’s an excellent continuous insulation

High R value at 6.5 R/in

Blowing agent is water - no CFC’s or HCFC’s means low global warming potential

More fire retardant than other board insulations

It’s vapor impermeability can be useful

 

Polyiso limitations

 

It’s not cheap

It cannot get wet

R value drops when cold

 

EPS (Expanded Polystyrene)

Why EPS insulation is great

 

Good R value per inch - 3.6-4.2 R/in depending on density

Cheap!

Vapor permeable

Flame retardant without HBCD

Water blown - no CFC’s or HCFC’s = low global warming potential

Does not absorb moisture socan be used in wet locations

Can be structural

Resistant to mold

Can be recycled and made from recycled components

 

EPS limitations

 

Fragile

Ants love it

 

Mineral Wool

Why mineral wool is great

 

~4 R/in

Great sound attenuation

Can get wet and be used underground

Highly resistant to pests

High recycled content

Zero global warming potential

 

 

Mineral wool limitations

 

Expensive!  Even more costly than polyiso

It’s more difficult to install than poly iso

Potential formaldehyde problems limit its use to exterior applications
