True Turtle defines sustainability as making informed, pragmatic choices to integrate green design that add value to projects and services. The following examples illustrate how True Turtle integrates sustainable choices with value:

Select projects that are close to public transportation, in locations that allow high-density development and/or where the value of existing infrastructure can be captured.

All projects use natural and renewable materials. At 1003 Saber Lane, for instance, slate, soapstone and renewable bamboo were utilized. Other projects use marble, granite and natural stone with wheat or strawboard. These natural materials are cost effective and inherently attractive choices that resonate with renters and purchasers alike.

Landscapes use native plants that require no irrigation. Low-flow or dual-flush toilets, low flow shower heads and faucets are standard fixtures for all projects. While 4114 New Hampshire will push the envelope by installing a grey water system to further reduce water use.

First, limit energy loss by paying attention to the building envelope through the use of energy-efficient windows and doors as well as the insulation and careful sealing of gaps. Second, use Energy Star-rated appliances. Third, assess if heat recapture or solar hot water can be justified to further reduce energy use. Fourth, assess if solar power is justified to offset non-renewable energy sources. The 2/3 unit apartment building at 4114 New Hampshire is an example of an ultra-low-energy building. Design features include solar hot water heating, solar photo voltaic energy and extensive building envelope upgrades.

True Turtle is committed to reducing waste to landfills. For instance, we recycled hundreds of pounds of metal, reused framing and finished lumber for the project at 4114 New Hampshire. With 7539 Flamewood, we donated, sold or reused lumber, drywall, cabinets, hardwood flooring, carpeting and other materials. We find cost-effective solutions by working with local building supply reuse centers and using pre-loved lighting, cabinetry, faucets and more.
